October Meeting Minutes

Old Business

Red Ribbon Week – Cathy Walker Steidinger advised the PTA volunteers helped hang art work in the hallways, helped get ready for the balloon launch and helped with grandparents day.  She thanked everyone who volunteered.

Picture Day – It happened September 23rd.  Thank you to all volunteers.

Monicals Night – It happened Monday, September 12th.  We made $156.47.  We can do another one in 6 months.

McTeacher Night – It was brought up to the teachers in a faculty meeting.  Teachers are emailing Mr. Kean if they are interested.  There will need to be a teacher or a PTA member at each register (4 registers).  It will be on Monday, October 24 from 5-7 pm.  Posters will be hung up at the school and around town.  A card will be handed out to each student.  The card has to be brought in to  McDonald’s on the 24th.

Ronald McDonald House Pop Tabs – A letter will be sent home soon.  McDonalds has agreed to give each child in the Elementary School a special treat if we reach our goal.  The goal is to fill a 1 gallon jug for each class (25 total).  Once a jug is filled the teacher will give it to Mr. Kean.  It was suggested the kids need a visual to see how close we are getting to the goal.  Two teachers will make a poster of a house with lines that can be marked off each time a jug is filled.  This poster will be hung up near the office.

Campbell’s – Label’s for Education.  Their website has contests and games you can play to earn Campbell’s points for the school.

Playground – Superintendent and principal are working on choosing the ground surface.

New Business

Holiday Toy Drive – Amy Kasper will be chair person.  A note will be sent home.  We still have large boxes from last year to collect the toys.  It needs to be a new toy.  Each child that brings a toy in will have their name entered into a drawing.  A date has not been set yet.  Last year it lasted for 2 weeks.

Scrip Cards – An order will be sent in before Christmas.  A note and order form will be sent home.  Forms are being redone.  It was suggested to keep the % that each company donates on the order form.  It was also suggested to list out the top 5 stores/restaurants/etc, then put the website for everyone to look at.  We will not be ordering on-line.

Parent-Teacher Conferences – PTA will provide food for all 3 schools on Thursday, October 27th.  We will need salads, desserts and chips.  Food will need to be at the school by 3.  A sign up sheet was passed around.

Fundraising – We will be doing 1 large fundraising in the Fall and 1 in the Spring.

Ideas

  • Gift wrapping before Christmas.  $1 a present.  If we do it this year and again next year we need to purchase wrapping paper when it goes on clearance.
  • PTA Carnival.  Looking at weekend of April 28th.  Ideas: carnival games, dunk tank or pie in the face, art class paint faces, balloon animals, cake walk, sack races.  We could give tickets to teachers to use as rewards for the students.
  • Scrip Cards.  Do it once a quarter and make a link on the PTA website to print off order forms.
  • We should alternate years of doing a garage sale and a PTA carnival.

September Meeting Minutes

  • Red Ribbon Week – Cathy Walker-Steidinger spoke about Red Ribbon Week.  She thanked the PTA.  They help out a lot during this week.  This year it will be October 11-14.  Theme is “Respect yourself, respect your health, Be Drug Free.”  She will need volunteers that will help decorate the school, work during Grandparents visits (welcome the guests, check them in – last year there was 660 guests), help put pins on ribbons, help with the balloon launch.  ACE Hardware is helping with balloons and helium.  520 balloons will need to be blown up.  A sign up sheet was passed around.  This year there is an assembly with Mrs. Kate.
  • Playground Equipment – Everything went really well.  It was installed on August 5 & 6.  The next stage is the ground servicing.  We had a few volunteers to help out.  A thank you not was put in the Courier.  Mr. Kean advised the kids love it.  Local businesses have donated $2670.  It is being looked into to get rid of the rocks.  To use the “green” tire surface it will cost around $50,000.
  • Registration – We had plenty of volunteers.  We sold 28 GCMS red tote bags that were left over from teacher appreciation last year ($3 each – we still have a few more if anyone is interested).  We also sold GCMS t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, crewneck sweatshirts and hoodies.  We have placed 2 orders so far from Hayden’s Sporting Goods in Rantoul.  To place an order there has to be a minimum of 18 pieces to order.
  • Headlice Check – It occurred on September 2nd at the Elementary School and Middle School.  We need to have a few extra people to be on stand by in case people cancel.  Confidentiality is very important!!
  • Picture Day – It will occur on Friday, September 23rd, we already have volunteers (4-5 people)
  • Website – It has been updated with the new officers.  We are going to update it in a timely manner.  Lori Clinton (PTA Secretary) will put the minutes from the monthly meetings on.
  • Box Tops – Vicki Phillips advised last year we sent in 28,463 box tops which totaled $2800.  Kim Brewer will take over being the chair person.  She needs 2 volunteers for each grade to be the contact person.  A sign up sheet was passed around.  The dates need to be checked, cut and counted.  Each quarter there will be a class winner that gets cookies from Subway, banner for the class and an announcement made by Mr. Kean over the intercom.
  • Campbell’s Soup – Shay Henderson will be helping Janice.  There are new products (BIC, Post Cereal).  They want the UPC code.
  • Fundraising

Monicals Night – It just occurred night before the PTA Meeting.  Monicals donated 20% of the bill to PTA.  WE will find out in 30 days.  We will do another one in the fall.  You have to have the flyer to give to Monicals for the PTA to get the money.

Charleston Fundraising – Forms will be sent home.  There is a new book this year.  We will accept donations if someone would rather do that than purchasing something.

McTeacher Night – Teachers would work with McDonald’s workers to keep track of the profit.  We would get 20%.  We are looking at October 24 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  They would need 1 person at each register.  Mr. Kean will bring it up at the faculty meeting.  A flyer will be sent home once we finalize everything.

Collecting pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House – We can have a class competition each quarter.  The winners would each get a happy meal coupon and 2nd place would get a dessert coupon.  McDonald’s has a representative that would come and count the tabs and bring the prizes.  We would need a contact person for each grade.  We can use milk jugs to collect the tabs.

We will know about the McDonald’s Grant September 30th.

We will turn in a Scrip Order around Christmas time.  Info will be sent home to advise when.

Middle School – Each grade would have a quarter (October , January and April) to do a bake sale during the lunch period.  The grade that makes the most money would win a prize (pizza party).  PTA would make the flyers.  The students would work the sales table and bring in the food to sell.

Middle School – Each person would have a piece of paper with the top 10 reasons why they support the PTA.  Each person that signs the paper donates $1.

Mr. Kean thanked the PTA for everything they do!!
